most of the photos on this site say "onboard flash not used" alongside them. the trick with a lot of them is that one or more radio-controlled external flashes are somewhere out of frame lighting up the rider. in this picture, it snuck into the frame. see strobist for a whole load of interesting ideas for using flash.
